The mission is to effectively address the causes and complexities of the homeless and working poor by providing shelter, food, clothing, case management services, treatment services, transitional planning for short and long term goals, subsidized housing, education, employment, and a path towards independence and success.
The Shelter provides over 95 beds for men, women and families at 4 Merritt St. Hot meals are served three times a day for those in the shelter and those living in poverty. The Shelter serve meals three times a day and provide boxed and canned goods to the 11000 individuals and families to help them make ends meet. Between the kitchen and the pantry, the Shelter provides approximately 60,000 meals per month to individuals and families in our community.
Open Door Shelter also operates a number of private residences, providing supportive housing to those who are working and earning an income, but unable to afford housing in the area.

How long have you been in business?
Since 1984.
What is your primary product or service?
Providing support for those in crisis, homeless, or living in poverty. Services include shelter, food, housing, job training and other support to end homelessness for individuals and families with children.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The community saw a need to address the issues of homelessness and poverty. Local community leaders gathered and developed the shelter and it has been in operation more than 30 years.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Open Door Shelter is the only shelter in Greater Norwalk and provides social services support for those in crisis and living in poverty. The shelter addresses the causes and affects of homelessness by providing case management and support. Staff offer support and counseling to those who are looking for resources so they can stay housed. The organization works in partnership with numerous other nonprofits and government entities to deliver services. More than 500 volunteers provide support every year.
